super charging our rv fridge

Our Solitude S-Class 3550BH-R came with a residential refrigerator.  Honestly, if we could have chosen, we would not have picked this.  We didn’t want to be reliant on battery power to keep things cold.  However, for anyone else that has bought anything over the last two years, you know you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.  The fact that we were able to find the model we wanted on the lot was a miracle, and we were not going to split hairs over refrigerators.

Fairly quickly, we were total converts.  I love the french doors, I love having the freezer on the bottom, and did I mention the ice maker?!?!  However, it does drain the battery.  If we leave home with a full battery, it depletes while we’re driving and by the time we get to our destination it’s pretty much dead.  This setup would be fine for someone that doesn’t boondock and is staying in a campground every night where you can completely recharge the batteries, but this is not how we travel.

Our first night boondocking, Andy was up at 3AM running the truck trying to ensure we had enough of a battery to get the slides in the next morning.  We knew this setup had to change

Insert: the “supercharger”.  In simple terms, it’s a battery charger that’s connected to the truck with a 30A custom plug.  This allows us to overcome the voltage gap between the truck and the fifth wheel.

Andy purchased it on Amazon along with the install.  He put a plug in the side of the truck so that its a seamless look.  Everything he used is linked below.

We are super happy with the end result.  It keeps the battery charged at 100% while we’re driving and we don’t have to worry about losing a fridge full of food.

Plug and switch in the bed of truck.
