Best Campground in the Black Hills of South Dakota

Updated: Oct 3

We've stayed at Rafter J Bar in Hill City, SD two times. This is not only the best campground in the Black Hills, this might be one of the best campgrounds I’ve ever been to. Whatever is higher than 5 stars is this place. The greenspace to campsite ratio is unparalleled. The spots are HUGE, and you definitely don’t feel packed in like sardines like at so many RV parks. They have the campsites organized in loops, but in between the loops are wide open spaces that make you feel like you’re in the wilderness. Just one of the reasons why this is the best campground in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

This campground also has a pool and a little playground which for me is up there with water and electricity. We’ve stayed at no amenity places and it’s fine, but it’s really nice to have a place for the kids to play. Also, we’ve learned over the years… that the easiest way for us to set up camp is for me to take the kids and dogs and leave until my husband is ready. Another reason why I love campgrounds with playgrounds.

The pool was heated which was a necessity in my opinion as the high was low 70’s / high 60’s each day. I’m a “I have to be dying of heat stroke to get in the pool” person, but my kids got in and had a blast. There was also a little hot tub that I did partake of.

Another important thing to note… this campground was clean. For those of you that know me (us), you know that Brizgis clean is not normal person clean. Brizgis clean is…. Next level.

Rafter J also has a little camp store which is something I prefer at campgrounds. Though the prices are higher than your average grocery store, it’s so nice to have the convenience when it’s time for dinner, you’re out of ketchup, and need to avoid a full scale toddler mutiny.

Anytime we’re in an area for a few days we will check out other campgrounds always on the hunt for cool places to stay. We didn’t see anything else in the Black Hills that even compared to Rafter J. If you are considering a stay here book right away when reservations open up for the season. It fills up fast!

Tips: Call as soon as reservations open up for the upcoming season. 2025 reservations haven't been announced yet, but typically the beginning of January.
